Goodbye for Now
I’m retiring this blog for a bit. Instead, I am going to explore some of my ideas regarding the Internet, digital culture and media measurement on another blog, modern and im/material things. Hopefully the six of you that read my blog will follow the new blog.

Hijab-Wearing Women Like Rock Music, Eat Chocolate
“Rock appeals because it rebels against the norm, it sells on the angst of not belonging – something women in hijab relate to,” she says. “It’s the natural choice for a hijabi.” From the Guardian’s “Hijab-Wearing Women Rock:Why hijab-wearing Muslim women have a real affinity for hard rock”

Efterklang and The Danish National Chamber
Efterklang, a Danish band whose music is as epic but more joyful than Sigur Ros’, re-released their album Parades with the Danish National Chamber. Let me tell you, other than TNT’s Law and Order SVU marathon, this album has made battling a sinus cold a little better. And their new album promises to be brilliant as well!

Like, OMG, Gay is the New Black
The media won’t shut up about this. Get over it. Seriously. Adam Lambert making out with a man on stage is not really transgressive. Can we talk about how much the song, amongst other things, sucked last night? Because it did.

The Art of Walton Ford
Detail of ‘Dirty Dick Burton’s Aide de Camp’ 2002 (detail)
Meet Walton Ford, my new favorite artist.
I’ll spare you my opinions of his work and instead quote Walton discussing his own work:

3 Takes on Muslin, or A Return of Satire Friday
First two posts via Retropolitics.
The last is a SNL classic: SNL: Crazy McCain Rally Lady. “No, Ma’am, he’s not a Arab.” “…Let me tell ya, it says he, ah, he convorts with terriers”
I think reality is satirical enough.

'Going Muslim,' or Sometimes Cultural Idioicy is...
Tunku Varadarajan, a professor at NYU’s Stern Business School, wrote a remarkable piece in Forbes a few days ago. ‘Going Muslim’ is remarkable not because it’s brilliant or reflects critical acumen; it’s remarkable because its idiotic, racist drive toward continuing to ‘other’ Arab/Muslim men was written by an ‘other.’ Here are some choice...

Romaine Brooks, or My New Favorite Artist
Brooks’ Bio: “Romaine Brooks was a lesbian artist who is known for her portraiture as well as for her nonmonogamous dating patterns. Her portraits, especially those she created...

Shame on you, "Yes on 1" Voters
How dare you “Yes on 1” voters celebrate, revel in the denigration of other people’s love. How dare you use morality as justification for explicit bigotry, the promulgation of your idiotic ideology and antiquated notions of tradition and sanctity. How dare you use the rhetoric of traditional values to further subjugate fellow citizens, to relegate them to something lower than...

I have been on a tumbling hiatus lately. For the three of you that read my tumble log with regularity, I extend my deepest, most heartfelt apologies. My hiatus is, however, a little justified because I, along with 15 of my friends, have been working on an online journal about people and their social media practices. The project, which has the working title “We Are Local,” is a giant tumble log of...

This cake was made by my friend Maeve for a mutual friend’s birthday. The cake was intended to be a joke and not a celebration per se of Zynga’s Farmville game. Walnut buttercream frosting separates the layers and is used to adhere the fondant to the rice crispy shapes that were used to make the vegetables. This cake is...
