Brooks’ Bio: “Romaine Brooks was a lesbian artist who is known for her portraiture as well as for her nonmonogamous dating patterns. She produced many paintings throughout her career that depicted confident women dressed in fashionable men’s clothing, and of her many lovers - especially her primary partner of fifty years, Natalie Barney. Her portraits, especially those she created of herself, were amazing examples of unconcealed lesbian art in the early twentieth century.”

Stellar use of greys. Check. Controversial and political subject matter. Check. Bold use of line and form in her portraits. double check. Seriously, what’s not to love about this woman’s work. I only wish I was introduced to her work a lot earlier.
