“Rock appeals because it rebels against the norm, it sells on the angst of not belonging – something women in hijab relate to,” she says. “It’s the natural choice for a hijabi.”

From the Guardian’s “Hijab-Wearing Women Rock:Why hijab-wearing Muslim women have a real affinity for hard rock

The article is about Hijab wearing women who like rock music. Really? SERIOUSLY? How about an expose about substantial things like Hijabis who like chocolate or Hijabis who dress themselves?

There are so many things wrong with this piece, so I’ll only list a few:

1. The assumption that Hijabis don’t listen to rock music.

There are two reasonable explanations for this: 1) the hijab covers their ears and thus renders them unable to hear music and 2) Islam hates Soundgarden.

2.  Explanation number two is impossible because “Spoon Man” is Allah’s personal jam. Allah is excited about this year’s reunion.

3. Muslim women are so backwards that they couldn’t possibly be savvy enough to, you know, turn on the radio or use the Internet to discover new music. Somehow the hijab prevents this.

4. There is nothing better to write about (regarding Islam and the U.K).

5. British colonialism did not teach them about rock music, so their affinity for it must be a recent development.

P.S. Apologies for any errors. I wrote this over a quick lunch. I’ll edit it later.
